PLANT ARRANGEMENTS

Here are a few things to consider when planting an arrangement.
1. What type of plants do you want to use?
* Succulents and cacti do well planted together.
* Annuals and perennials can be mixed together for a colorful outdoor arrangement. Be sure they are either all sun loving or all shade loving plants.
*Tropicals go well with each other, keep in mind that they will need to have the same light and water requirements.
2. Another thing to consider is texture and color. You want plants that compliment each other but not blend together to look like one big plant. The idea is that each plant shows off the other plant’s special traits.
*Fern leaf plants go well next to solid leaf plants.
*Large leaf plants should be paired with smaller leaved varieties.
*Dark green leaves show off the lighter green and variegated leaves.
3. A very popular technique is called the ”Thriller, Filler, Spiller”.
*Thriller – Usually a taller plant for height and wow factor.
*Filler – Shorter plants to fill in the main part of your pot.
*Spiller – Something that will flow over the sides of the pot.
4. An important factor when planting you arrangement is where will it be displayed?
If it is going against a wall or other permanent object you may want to put the “Thriller” towards the back with the “Spiller” flowing over the front.
For pots that will be viewed from all sides, placing the “Thriller” in the center, surrounded by the “Filler”, with the “Spiller around the edge might be the best.
5. Keep it simple. Using too many varieties of plants can look cluttered. You should also try to use odd numbers of plants. Three plants look more pleasing than two or four plants.
