Easy Potting Instructions
Step 1- Choosing a pot It is usually best to use a pot with a drainage hole in the bottom. This will help prevent water logging and root rot. To prevent soil from washing out of the hole you can use a piece of coffee filter, rock or even a broken piece of pottery to cover the hole. For pots without a drainage hole put a layer of perlite or gravel in the bottom first.
Step 2- Preparing plant For plants that are root bound it is good to loosen up the root ball to “fluff” the roots out. This will also help to encourage new root growth.
Step 3- Planting Make sure top of root ball is flush with top of soil. Soil piled up around the base of a plant can cause rot and can also suffocate the plant. There are exceptions to that rule such as succulents that are too tall and leggy can be planted deeper. Succulents have the ability to re-root along the stems.
Step 4- Soil Leave soil ½-1” below the rim of the container to allow room for any soil toppings you may want to use, and to allow room for watering.
Step 5- Saucers If your pot is sitting in a saucer you should empty the saucer after watering. For very dry plants you may leave them in a saucer of water to help them soak up water. You will still need to empty the saucer after about 30-45 minutes. Plants left sitting in a saucer of water can get water logged and rot. If you have a plant with high humidity needs you can put a layer of gravel in the saucer. This will allow you to keep water in the saucer without the plant sitting in the water.
